Friday Afternoons in ReadyTalk’s Engineering Department

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

I’m writing this post at 4:30 on a  Friday afternoon at ReadyTalk. The engineering team is winding down from a busy week. There are numerous activities going on and I can’t decide which one to join.

In deciding what to do, I carefully take into account where is the easiest place to go without being pegged by a million darts on the. Nerf wars are a very common occurrence late in the day in ReadyTalk Engineering, but on Fridays they seem to take on a life of their own.

So, I think to myself…The closest option would be the 2nd Floor Great Room where there is an intense session of Rock Band going on. With a number of our engineers coming from a musical backgrounds, it is always a pretty impressive showing. Rock Band is also great practice for the Battle of Bands that is supposed to take place between our Sales  and Engineering.

My second option would be to stop off in Team Room A to get a first row seat for a secondary jam session that’s taking place. Several of our engineers have grown up perfecting the art of strumming the guitar…all they need now is a lead singer to join the group! Let me know if you are a viable candidate.

My 3rd (and safest option), would be to stay right here at my desk and join in the Open Arena game that takes place every Friday. The only problem with this option is that I have no idea how to even start playing that game. All I know about it is there a lot of people and a lot of guns involved.

My 4th and final option would be to join a couple engineers on an afternoon jog. The only problem with this is that my idea of a jog is a light run/walk around the park and most of the engineers idea of a jog is  similar to a full sprint around several blocks.

Looking over my options I think I am going to grab a beer off the fresh keg that was just delivered from Wynkoop and get ready for my try out as the lead singer in Team Room A.

If you interested in trying out for the lead singer spot or any of our open engineering positions http://www.readytalk.com/about/careers-readytalk please e-mail me directly at Catherine.harrison@readytalk.com.

Inside Edition with Alex Abbott – Quality Engineer

Thursday, February 23rd, 2012

This week’s Inside Edition with ReadyTalk Engineering highlights a day in the life of Alex Abbott, a Quality Engineer on our Core team. Alex has been with ReadyTalk for almost 3 years now. Not only has he been a great addition to our Engineering team but he has also spent numerous hours giving back to our community. Alex coordinated a partnership with Skyline Park and has been in charge of organizing volunteers at ReadyTalk to help keep the park clean and looking beautiful. In addition to his work there, he is a big advocate for the Open World Learning Program http://www.openworldlearning.org/, where he works with underprivileged kids on computer programming, confidence building and time management. In between his time hacking code and giving back to the community, you will find Alex skydiving wherever he can.

  1. Describe a typical day for you at ReadyTalk
A typical day at ReadyTalk, starts with a meeting with my team where we figure out what tasks are the highest priority for the day. Sometimes, if we are lucky, somebody sings a show tune (that is the punishment for not updating all of your tasks before the meeting). Then I retreat to my desk to get started, but not before grabbing some delicious shame or fame pastry. When I start on the tasks for the day, I get lost in the sea of technology that we live in here. Sometimes I am compiling in Xcode on a Mac and testing our iPad client. Maybe using one of my windows VM or taking advantage of some powerful Linux servers to run simulations. I guess there are few days that I would call typical, but they are always interesting and I am never short an opportunity to learn something new. Any day might include a book club, a volunteering event, a creative thinking exercise or maybe a beer at the end of the day (that coconut stout might just be my favorite beer of all time).
  2. Why do you think ReadyTalk is the #1 company to work for in Colorado?
There are several things that make ReadyTalk awesome. One of the most important is the trust. It is the mutual respect that comes from a trusting environment that turns your peers into your friends.
  3. Tell us about your favorite day at work…
Some of my favorite days at work were leading up to one of our largest software releases in the company’s history. It was the largest concerted software effort of which I have been a part and seeing everyone pulling everything together and overcoming seemingly insurmountable challenges was truly an amazing experience.
  4. If someone were interested in working on your team at ReadyTalk what advice would you have for them?
Bring your A-Game and get ready for the best job of your life!

Inside Edition with Pete Kinser, UX Design Engineer

Thursday, February 9th, 2012

This week’s Inside Edition with ReadyTalk Engineering highlights a day in the life of our UX Design Engineer, Pete Kinser. Pete has been with ReadyTalk for almost 4 months and brings more than 10 years of experience in the field to the team. He has been an awesome addition, and even though he did go to theUniversityofMissouriwe have high hopes for him here at ReadyTalk.

Inside Edition with Pete Kinser:

  •  Describe a typical day for you at ReadyTalk
My day usually begins by grabbing a quick snack in the kitchen (banana, almonds, green tea and the occasional yogurt). I settle into my desk and chat with the other UX guy at ReadyTalk. Generally, we regroup over what’s happened the day before and talk through potential design solutions for various projects. The bulk of my day is spent meeting with various teams to learn about new projects, to understand potential roadblocks and to contribute to the development discussion form a user experience perspective.
  • Why do you think ReadyTalk is the #1 company to work for in Colorado?
There’s a sense of shared optimism in the work we’re doing. No idea is too big or too small. The teams are focused on executing at a high level. The customer is always the priority.
  • Tell us about your favorite day at work….
My favorite day at work is full of tests. Usability tests. Working with users to better understand how our designs work, or don’t, helps to bring a lot of insight and energy to the design process. Being able to integrate user feedback into our designs helps build highly useful, usable and desirable products.
  • If someone were interested in working on your team @ReadyTalk what advice would you have for them?
Love what you do. There’s a lot of passion with the walls of ReadyTalk. I’d wager most people invest time outside of ReadyTalk to continue to learn about their discipline. We’re engaged with our professional organizations, actively pursue continuing learning opportunities, and contributors to the knowledge bases for our communities.

ReadyTalk Recruiting Gears up for 2012

Friday, January 6th, 2012

After hitting the slopes and consuming our fair share of Bailey’s and Coffee during the holidays, ReadyTalk Recruiting is back and ready for a huge 2012. On the agenda for the year, we have hopes of adding an additional 20 engineers to our technical team, collaborating with our new HR Director on recruiting strategies, attending DJUG and Denver Tech MeetUps, hosting a Hack night and much, much more.

In addition to our incessant search for the top Java Developers, this year we would like to take a moment to give you a more detailed look at the different opportunities we currently have available within our technical team. Our main priority, at the moment, is finding a few great Engineering Managers to join the

madness. We have awesome teams here at ReadyTalk and the big focus for our engineering managers is to continue to grow the success of each of those teams. With a number of new engineers coming on board coaching our teams on how to continue to learn from one another and rely on each other is a big part of management here at ReadyTalk. If this sounds like the right fit for you please check out a more detailed job description.

A new opportunity on the team is an Engineering Product Owner. In this position, you will be the #1 advocate for ReadyTalk Engineering. You will be taking the ideas from our engineers 20 percent time and helping integrate those ideas into product development. You will

be communicating with marketing, sales and project managers in explaining what we would like to develop and why we would like to use our engineering resources on these products. This is an internal facing position…essentially your client is our engineering team. Let us know if you would like to learn more!

Along with our search for an Engineering Manager and a new Engineering Product Owner, we are on the hunt for a couple of people who are part detective, part creative problem solver, and part tech nerd to join our group of Quality Assurance Engineers.  We have integrated our Software Developers and QAs, where you will be working very closely together throughout the entire development process. On average, there is a 4 to 2 ratio of Software Developers to QA. As part of QA, you will be writing and maintaining test documentation in addition to investigating the source of software defects. Check out all of the details.

Lastly, we are focused on building out our Application Infrastructure team this year. Your top priority here will be to make sure our server is up and running at all times. You will be building and configuring the environment for development and QA production along with working with our engineers to determine what the requirements for each environment is. Finally, the Application Infrastructure Engineers have to ensure that all designs can be integrated into the overall system.

This wraps up our plans for 2012. We hope that one of these opportunities has caught your attention and you will be the next addition to our ReadyTalk Family. We wanted to mention that if you are interested in exploring any of these positions further please contact ReadyTalk Recruiting directly at Catherine.harrison@readytalk.com OR katie.green@readytalk.com. We can help to expedite your application process. Happy New Year and we look forward to hearing from you soon!

ReadyTalk Recruiting Wraps Up a Busy Year

Tuesday, December 13th, 2011

ReadyTalk Recruiting is busy getting ready for the New Year! We have a number of positions open and are looking for the top talent to fill these roles. We are primarily looking for Quality Assurance Engineers, specifically those with a good understanding of development and some exposure to Automation.

In addition to QA Engineers, we are looking for an Engineering Manager who is passionate about building teams around individuals who want to develop great, cross-platform software that gets used and embraced by customers.

And finally we are always looking for Software Developers for our Core and Conference Center teams. Check out the deets below! If you or anyone you know is interested in learning more please contact me directly at Catherine.harrison@readytalk.com OR my colleague Katie Green at katie.green@readytalk.com.

Beside focusing on finding the top talent RT Recruiting has had a very busy week within the community. Tuesday night we helped sponsor the Denver Java Users Group holiday party with a couple of our Software Engineers…. On Wednesday, we headed over to East High School  here in Denver to help prepare high school seniors with job interview techniques and resume tips. We learned about this awesome opportunity through Goodwill Denver. You can learn about other volunteer opportunities @GoodwillDenver. And on Thursday, we headed up to CU Boulder and delivered hot pizzas to the Computer Science lab where students were cramming for finals. The pizza was gone within 2 minutes of setting it down! It was awesome. I forgot how much college kids LOVE pizza…AND free food. Check out Katie getting ready for Finals with the rest of the CU Students…

I hope everyone has a safe and wonderful Holiday Season and we will see you in January!

Engineering Rock Stars Recognized on Labs Day

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

As Katie mentioned in her most recent blog, ReadyTalk Engineering just held labs a few weeks back. It’s a time for our audio and web conferencing engineers to explore their passions and expand their knowledge and skill set.  However, what wasn’t mentioned is my favorite part…The Awards ceremony! When the day is finally winding down and everyone is sipping on a nice cold brewskie, everyone from engineering puts their votes in for 3 separate categories.

First off is Most Evil Genius - This is the project that could take over the world. Or maybe change the way people think about the ReadyTalk service. OR maybe BOTH!?! Ryan Kish is our most recent recipient of this award for his implementation of Puppet for managing server OS infrastructure. Check out Ryan and his trophy:

The second award goes to our Shiniest Presentation - This project has got bells and whistles and maybe a Keynote presentation with lots of lolcatz and fancy transition effects. And for this go around the award went to the iOS Team for their iOS participant. The team was made up of Joel Dice, Matt Weaver and Michael Keesey.

Our final award goes to the Most Geeky - This project will be pure geek. If Einstein had been part of ReadyTalk Engineering, he would have chosen this as his labs project and pulled it off with a Flawless Victory! And Most Geeky went to David Clements for his presentation on data analysis of polling usage.

Not only do our winners get a very fancy homemade trophy to place on their desk for several weeks, they also get to walk around the office with a great sense of pride…that is until next Labs rolls around. Please stay tuned to see who our big winners are next go around!

If you think you have the next big idea, and could be the next recipient of one of our ReadyTalk Labs trophies please let me know. I would be happy to talk with you in more detail about the engineering opportunities we currently have available. You can reach me directly at Catherine.harrison@readytalk.com or you can check out our Careers Page @ http://www.readytalk.com/about/careers-readytalk.

Have we mentioned that we’re hiring?

Friday, October 21st, 2011

ReadyTalk recruiting has had a couple of very busy weeks. We are excited to have 2 new engineers on board who joined our team on Monday, October 17. Marina Karpiak is joining our Core Team as a Quality Assurance Engineer, and Mat Branyon will be helping Matt Klich in supporting our entire engineering team as an Application Infrastructure Engineer.

After contributing to the blog for a couple of weeks we realized that we never fully explained the importance of what we do and why we do it. First off, as many of you know the Denver market has become a very competitive place to find the TOP engineering talent. What we have learned is that for the most part, the best employees are already employed. It is our job to first find the top talent, and then share with them what we have going on in the engineering cave here at ReadyTalk. Our job is to make sure that as many people as possible realize what an awesome place this is to work, and the opportunities that await them when they get here…20% time and Labs, Nerd Book Club, Shame Donuts/Fame Donuts, Scotchtoberfest, Friday afternoon Open Arena competitions, beer brewing, Guitar Club, afternoon jogs, office planks, Moscow Mules …and much, much more!

As soon as we catch a candidate’s attention, it is our job to get them in the door. Working for ReadyTalk has made our jobs VERY easy…typically speaking, once they are in the door they are hooked. They want to know how they can get their picture on Famedonuts.com OR be the next winner of the Evil Genius award that is handed out at the end of Labs.

If YOU are interested in learning more about ReadyTalk Engineering please contact me directly at Catherine.harrison@readytalk.com. You can also follow us on Twitter @RTRecruiting to get the inside scoop on what is going on in engineering, along with the most recent job opportunities. We look forward to hearing from you!
