The 2009 Federal Transportation Bill: Why It Matters to You Wednesday, June 24th 2009 Will Hansfield, Transportation for America Every five to six years, congress authorizes funding for the coming 5-6 year period for all surface transportation projects, including highways and bridges, public transportation and bicycling & pedestrian networks. The current bill, SAFETEA-LU, expires in September, 2009, and congress will be deciding how to spend our tax dollars over the coming months. The Transportation for America campaign is proposing a broad reform agenda to meet the challenges of the 21st century, and the implications of this next bill cannot be understated. We face a host of challenges related to transportation: dependency chronic gridlock household transportation costs climate instability the economic downturn crumbling infrastructure Overlapping all is the ability to finance our current transportation obligations, let alone to invest in a 21st century transportation system. The focus of this webinar will be a brief history of transportation policy in the U.S., an analysis of how federal policy helps or hinders forward thinking local transportation and land use policies, and how businesses, elected officials, and concerned citizens can help to reshape the rules by working on the upcoming transportation bill over the next few months. It's hazardous if dumped in landfills; more and more states have made it illegal to put electronics in the trash. As a result, a whole new industry has been created—the electronic recycling industry. Unfortunately, the problem of shipping unwanted electronics illegally to far-off lands with less stringent regulations, such as China and India, is still rampant. As a result, underage and/or untrained workers there are often exposed to hazardous materials. This problem makes the responsible recycling of electronics more important than ever. It's not just an environmental issue any more; it's also a human rights issue. John Shegerian, Chairman of Electronic Recyclers International, the nation's leading recycler of electronic waste and a trailblazing green business, along with Jim Puckett, Founder of the Basel Action Network, a non-profit environmental watchdog organization that started an e-stewards concept to help manage responsible handling and recycling of electronics, will co-present this essential discussion on electronic waste and human rights and where the two intersect. Jim Puckett Jim Puckett has been an environmental health and justice leader for 23 years. In the past he served as Greenpeace International's Toxics Director and Toxic Trade Campaign Coordinator, while based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The Greenpeace Toxic Trade Campaign was instrumental in working to achieve The Basel Ban amendment as well as numerous regional waste trade bans. In 1997 he left Greenpeace to return to his Seattle, USA home to help found the Basel Action Network (BAN) program, an NGO watchdog on toxic trade. As Executive Director of BAN, he has represented civil society within the Basel Convention since its adoption in 1989. In 2001 Jim traveled to China to investigate and document for the first time the recycling of imported e-waste. The release of the BAN report and film Exporting Harm in 2002 and a later report and film, The Digital Dump in 2005 based on another visit to Nigeria, revealed the ugly truth about e-waste exportation from rich to poorer countries. BAN has since found itself at the forefront of activism calling for responsible electronic waste management globally.
